Made for the opening of Parade at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. Parade is a ballet with music by Satie and a one-act scenario by Jean Cocteau. The ballet was composed for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and premiered on Friday, May 18th, 1917 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, with costumes and sets designed by Pablo Picasso, choreography by Léonide Massine (who danced), and the orchestra conducted by Ernest Ansermet. Hockney designed both sets and costumes for the three 20th-century French works that were offered at the Metropolitan Opera House under the embracing title ''Parade.'' In addition to Satie's "Parade," the works in question also included ''Les Mamelles de Tiresias,'' an opera with libretto by Guillaume Apollinaire and music by Francis Poulenc, and ''L'Enfant et les Sortileges,'' an opera with libretto by Colette and music by Maurice Ravel.
