[Piaf, Edith. (1915–1963)] Kiffer, Charles. (1901–1992)

Two Portraits by Charles Kiffer

Spectacular duo of original portraits of Piaf by the French artist so closely associated with the French entertainment world of the mid-20th century. Each accomplished in ink, crayon, and gouache. Each signed "Kiffer," 12.5 x 20 cm, mounted to a larger sheet. In fine condition.

After making a portrait of Maurice Chevalier in 1923, Kiffer came to the singer's attention and designed two famous posters for him in 1926 and 1927, later designing many others for him through 1963. He designed posters for other French stars, including George Guétary (1933), Charles Trenet, Yves Montand, Rina Ketti, Gaby Morley (1939), Josephine Baker, Brigitte Bardot, Mistinguett, the clown Alex Porto, the mime Marcel Marceau, and Edith Piaf (1936).
