[Joachim, Joseph. (1831-1907)]

Memorial Concert Program

1907 Memorial concert program honoring the great Hungarian violinist, dedicatee of the Brahms Concerto and many other works. The performers included Max Burkhardt, Fritz Becker, Severin Eisenberger, R.F. Mannreich and Ossip Schnirlin, with works by Verdi, Schubert, Brahms, and Joachim. Single sheet, rather toned with a horizontal folding crease and two small corner tears; overall very good. 5.75 x 9 inches (14.7 x 22.8 cm).

Violinist Ossip Schnirlin was a student of Joachim and a noted violinist in early twentieth-century Germany, playing on the Stradivarius "Apollo" violin. He was married to Gertrud, the sister of Bertolt Brecht, and was a friend of the sculptor Käthe Kollwitz. Amid the climate of rising anti-Semitism, he and his wife committed suicide in summer 1939.
