Massenet, Jules. (1842–1912)

Autograph Musical Quotation from "Hérodiade" and Original Photograph

A boldly penned AMQS from the great French composer, four measures marked "Andte" being "Il est doux, il est bon", the most famous aria of his 1881 "Hérodiade. " The work is here identified as "Salomé" and is signed and dated Paris, April [18]83. 16.5 x 6 cm, small block of toning, otherwise fine. Sold together with an original albumen photograph of the composer.

Hérodiade was premiered in Brussels, Theatre de la Monnaie, December 19, 1881. A high point in the composer's career, this opera is a different version from Oscar Wilde's Salomé made into opera by Richard Strauss. Here, the focus is on Salomé as a child as deserted by Hérodiade, her mother. (7045)
