White, Josh. (1914 - 1969)

Original 1945 Photograph Serenading the Tuskegee Airmen

Original 1945 10 x 8 inch photograph of the American singer, guitarist, songwriter, actor, and civil rights activist. White is shown with his guitar "serenading troops of the all-Negro 332nd Fighter Group known as the 'Red Tails,' with the 'Red Tail Blues'..."

The Tuskegee Airmen were the African American pilots who fought in World War II as the 332nd Fighter Group and 477th Bombardment Group of the US Army Air Corps. There are also sometimes referred to as the Red Tail Angels or Red Tails, unofficial terms that were used during the War to describe the mostly unknown group of Airmen because of the distinctive red paint used on the tails of their fighter aircraft.  (6996)
