Doubleweight sepia photograph of the English conductor and composer, inscribed in black ink on the lower left: “To my good friend James Furlong: souvenir of a long and pleasant co-operation – past, present and yet to come! 1923-1931. Sincerely always, Gene Goossens. Rochester N.Y. March 1931." The photographer’s embossed stamp on the lower right: “Alexander Leventon, Rochester NY." In Fine condition, with very light silver mirroring and a few small black ink spots.


Goosens started as Beecham's assistant and later gave the British concert premiere of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. In the US, he was conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (1923 -1931) and from 1931 to 1946 he succeeded Fritz Reiner as the conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. (6960)
