[Hollywood] Gable, Clark. (1901–1960)

Large Signed C.S. Bull Photograph

Original doubleweight photograph by C.S. Bull, showing the handsome star getting into a car. 11 x 14 inches. Stamped by the photographer on the verso and boldly signed and inscribed by Gable in his customary green fountain pen ink: "To Dixie - You're the best of all tennis partners. Clark." Creasing to corners and around edges, small tear extending from right margin to just inside the image, otherwise fine.

Tennis, it used to be said, was Hollywood's game. Clark Gable (and Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Carole Lombard etc.) used to play with Alice Marble and her coach, Eleanor Tennant. "Dixie" was a common nickname for "Richard" but we have been unable to learn of any Richards with whom Gable regularly played tennis. (6897)
