Corelli, Arcangelo. (1653–1713)

XII solos for a violin with a thorough bass for the harpsicord or violoncello, opera quinta

London: Printed for and sold by I. [i.e. J.] Walsh, in Catherine Street in Strand. [1740]. 68pp. Lacking the front title page ["The Second Part" is present], but with the engraved portrait of Corelli by H. Howard engraved by Van der Gucht. 33 cm. In a spectacular full leather binding with significant gilt tooling, a repeated pattern of lyres, to boards and spine, the name "Miss Grant" impressed on both boards, additional gilt tooling on inner silked endpages. The final page rather stained and with upper margin torn and repaired, otherwise fine throughout. RISM CC 3827.

The 12 Sonatas Opus 5 include the famous "La Folia" Variations for violin and accompaniment. Corelli's famous student, Geminiani, thought so much of the Opus 5 Sonatas that he arranged all the works in this group as Concerti Grossi. (6435)
