Leo, Leonardo. (1694 - 1744)

Solfeggi per il Soprano. Del Sigre. Leonardo Leo. Maestro Napolitano - 18th C. Manuscript

"In Italy there is a collection of lessons for sol-fa-ing, called 'Solfeggi.' This collection, composed by the celebrated Leo for the use of beginners, is highly esteemed." - Jean-Jacques Rousseau, in his Dictionnaire of 1768.

Copyist manuscript of 60 Solfeggios, ca. 1750. Oblong folio. 9 x 13 inches. 128 pages. Title plate affixed to cover describing the works as "piuttosto antichi" and the title page inscribed lower right in German "Selten und sehr wertvoll" ["rare an very valuable"]. Some later pencil annotations on a few pages, final leaf torn and repaired, otherwise in very fine condition throughout. Rare. RISM records 11 copyist manuscripts of Solfeggi by Leo, some including only a single work and only one including more of them collected in a single manuscript than in the present collection.

"Leo was the most versatile and technically the most accomplished among the Neapolitan composers of his time...The instructional compositions that he wrote for his pupils (partimenti, solfeggi, and intavolature) are among the most beautiful in the Neapolitan tradition. (Grove Online) (6405)
