[Strauss, Richard. (1864–1949)] Schmutzer, Ferdinand. (1870–1928)

Large Signed Portrait Etching

Striking lifetime portrait of the composer executed by the Austrian artist c. 1923, signed "F. Schmutzer" in pencil at the lower right within the image. From an edition of 50 impressions. Etching with soft ground on paper, plate size 20 3/8 x 16 3/8 in. (51.8 x 41.5 cm). Framed. In fine condition, with unobtrusive toning and slight water staining along the lower edge.

Four years before Schmutzer made his famous portrait of the Vienna Philharmonic, he made the present portrait of the composer and conductor so closely associated with this ensemble. In the same year as the first Salzburg Festival, Strauss sat for the artist who concentrated his portrait exculisively on the head of Strauss (by contrast to his other celebrated portraits of Hugo Wolf, Joseph Joachim etc.) (6350)
