Collection of 8 Signed Letters

An interesting collection of 8 signed autograph letters (4) and postcards (4) from the American dramatic soprano of Hungarian heritage and Swedish birth, one of the greatest of all Wagnerian heroic sopranos. All addressed to a young voice student, Jeanne Michael, written between 1944 and 1950. Some with very interesting content, a few excerpts as follows:

"Yes, it is most wise to place the middle range first...as it is the basis for higher and lower work. In this manner, no strain can result and your voice will sound relaxed and beautiful. It is indeed a great fact to attempt the 'Du bist die Ruh.' Once you accomplish the steady, warm shade of singing this most difficult selection, you will have attained a fine control. Many well-known singers have found this to be a most taxing song from the standpoint of clear and firm voice control..."

"As to my enjoying Italian roles - certainly I do like them. The Italian repertoire is one which I have learned prior to the German roles - so that they are an old and true love of mine. Besides, it is most healthful to sing in various languages."

"As for vocalizing...one practices for what one has to accomplish. My exercises are so varied and many, and have been constantly in use for many purposes that it would be utterly impossible for me to suggest them to you...for fine work, I can, however, suggest the exercises employed by the finest artists: in the books of Marchesi, and also the exercises in the book of Panofka..."

"During this concert tour there are many beautiful scenic places that meet the eye. We are touring for almost six weeks now - and autumn is magnificent in this part of the U.S. Soon the Met season will begin and we shall be sending operas through radio and you will probably listen in." (6107)
