[Dance] Volinine, Alexandre. (1882 - 1955)

Signed Photograph

Uncommon C. Rivas photograph of the important Russian dancer, signed and inscribed in 1919. 23.8 x 17.7cm. Removed from a scrapbook with heavy mounting traces on verso, large crease across lower third, just touching top of inscription, damage along right edge, not affecting signed area.

Volonine began at the Bolshoi and later danced with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, with Gertrude Hoffmann's so-called Ballets Russes at the Winter Garden Theater in New York in 1911, with Mordkin's All-Star Imperial Russian Ballet, and later partnered on tour with Adeline Genée. But it is as Anna Pavlova's longtime partner that he most remembered, having danced with her company on its various world tours from 1914 to 1925, partnering Pavlova and creating the role of the Young Poet in her Autumn Leaves (1919).
