"Manfred" was composed in 1848-9 to a translation from Byron by K. A. Suckow and abridged by Schumann. It was first published in piano-vocal score: the full score was not published until nearly a decade later in 1862. The premiere took place in Weimar on the 13th June 1852 under Liszt. Grove describes Schumann’s Manfred as "an idiosyncratic treatment of Byron’s play in which spoken dialogue alternates with 15 brief movements cast as vocal solos and ensembles, instrumental interludes, choruses and melodramas."
