Ink Wash Drawing and Letter

Original Ink and wash drawing by Gorey, an early illustration for an unknown book, four panels arranged in a square, each showing a man at one stage in the process of dissolving into the background. Accomplished on the reverse side of a thick paper proof page from "Lions and Lobsters and Foxes and Frogs" (fables from Aesop by Ennis Rees with drawing by Gorey), published in 1971. The drawing can be dated, therefore, to roughly this period. 8.25 x 5.25 inches overall and in very fine condition, with tiny pushpin holes along top edge, not affecting image. Sold together with an undated autograph note, signed "E. Gorey", to an unknown art director or editor: "If you don't think the sketch leaves enough room for the lettering I can always make the drawings a bit smaller." 1/2 page, 8vo; even toning, tiny pushpin holes along top edge.

A fine and characteristic original work by the American writer and artist noted for his macabre illustrated books. (5766)
