[Mozart, Constanze. (1762–1842)] Brazier, Nicolas. (1783–1838)

Chansons et Poésies Diverse - Inscribed to Constanze Mozart

Paris: Chez Rosa, Lib. Grande Cour du Palais Royal. 1821. First edition. Half title (verso blank); 1f (blank) [verso with engraving "Dédale & Icare"]; 1f. (title with engraving); 1 - 203 (vb) pp; Table (205 - 208 pp). Bound in contemporary hand-painted pink wrappers, the paint having faded to show the printed texts of another volume used here as wrappers, and with the title affixed at the spine. Wrappers and spine somewhat chipped, foxed and with rough edges throughout, though mostly clean. Inscribed to Constanze Mozart on the first free endpage by the French chansonnier and Vaudeville playwright: "offert à Madame Mozart par l'auteur, NB."

Brazier is remembered for his spirited and lively chansons and for his "Histoire des petits théâtres de Paris" (Paris, 1838). His collections of chansons include one in honour of the Bourbons, under the title "Souvenirs de dix ans" (Paris, 1824), as well as others published in 1835 and 1836.

After Mozart's death, his widow Constanze traveled extensively in Europe, devoting herself to the supervision of publications and concerts of Mozart's works. The first French editions of Mozart's works continued to be issued through the 1820's and it is likely that Constanze would have met Brazier - at the time, one of the most popular figures in musical Paris, then undertaking his large survey of Parisian theatres - during one of her visits to Paris, possibly related to one such publication.
