Autograph Letter

1 page (19 x 25 cm), no date. On paper blindstamped "Bath" at upper left. In fine condition, with usual creases, unevenly trimmed along left margin. Sold together with a period portrait engraving by Julien, 9 x 14 cm.


Addressed "Mio Carissimo Sigr. Théophile!" Translated in full: "I take the liberty to write to you a few lines to recommend to your care, my nephew, a Maestro of true Italian singing, who arrives in Russia to exercise his profession, and who requires your protection/sponsorship, and for your protection you will be assured of his, and my own, eternal gratitude. Embracing you warmly, I have the honor and pleasure of calling myself, your most obliged and -- Gio. Batt. Rubini."


A rare autograph letter from the Italian tenor, the leading bel canto singer of his day, creator of many important roles by Rossini and Donizetti and remembered in particular for his influence on Bellini, who wrote, among others, I Puritani (1835) expressly with his voice in mind. (5527)
