"The overtly contrapuntal textures of...Sonatinas (1932), Op. 54...are hallmarks of a new approach to composition. As though compensating for the extroversion of earlier music, the conspicuous counterpoint appears as a metaphor for seriousness and contemplation..." (Neil Minturn, "The Music of Sergei Prokofiev," p. 46)

The two Sonatinas were first performed on April 17, 1932 in London by the composer. It is abundantly clear that the composer devoted great care and attention to the corrections in these publication proofs, accomplished in the month following the work's premiere. Autograph working material of Prokofiev is very uncommon. The present annotated proofs, retained until now by their original owner, have not been previously studied and are an important new source for two of the composer's most interesting works for piano.
