Autograph letter from the great muse and wife, successively, of Gustav Mahler, Walter Gropius and Franz Werfel. 2 pp. August 2 [no year]. On her New York letterhead, addressed to Alice Warburg [née Magnus] and signed "Alma Maria." In fine condition.In part: "Selten hat mich etwas so gefreut – wie Ihr lieber Brief! – Aber ich war mehr als ein Jahr sehr krank! Ich hatte eine Herz-Thrombose – musste monatelang liegen, und als ich das erste mal auf- stand, wurde ich schwindlig und fiel furchtbar hin, wobei ich mir den linken Arm ganz oben an der Kugel brach! Nun hieß es wieder monatelang liegen und ich bin noch etwas invalid – versuche es aber Ende Aug. nach Rom zu fliegen ... es ist mein einziger Wunsch!"
["Rarely has anything made me so happy as your dear letter! I have been very sick for more than one! I had a heart Thrombose - had to lie for months, and then in one of the first times up, I became dizzy I and fell down terribly and broke the left arm right at the top at the shoulder! I was then again bedridden for months and I remain an invalid - I'm going to try to fly however at the end of August to Rome… it is my only desire!"] (5403)
