Cherubini, Luigi. (1760 - 1842)

Autograph Signed Letter

Autograph letter, signed "L. Cherubini," from the Italian-born composer who spent most of his working life in France and whom Beethoven regarded as the greatest of his contemporaries. Addressed to Madame Montgerault, 1 page, 8vo. No date [Samedi 12], but evidently after 1816 when he was appointed "surintendant de la musique du roi" under the restored monarchy of Louis XVIII. In French, in full: "I have the honor, Madame, to have reserved you three places for the King's Mass; I think you will need to have an escort to accompany you to the chateau. Take care to arrive at 11 o'clock precisely to the chapel vestibule where all of the assembled guests will be met by Mr. Levesque and then taken to their places. Please accept, Madame, my respectful hommage, from your devoted servant and admirer." With a few light stains, repaired tear, else fine. Sold together with a vintage postcard portrait. (5147)
