A remarkable signed photograph, inscribed from one legendary jazz drummer to another! 8 x 10 inch original doubleweight glossy photograph, inscribed by Wettling across his Paul Whiteman All American bass drum: "To Roy Knapp - World's greatest drum teacher - Geo. Wettling." In very fine condition, a remarkable item.Wettling played with the big bands of Artie Shaw, Bunny Berigan, Red Norvo, Paul Whiteman, and even Harpo Marx, but he was at his best (and will be best remembered) for his work in small 'hot' bands led by Eddie Condon, Muggsy Spanier, and himself.
Known as the "Dean of American Percussion Teachers," Roy C. Knapp's long tenure in Chicago dated from 1921. In 1938 he started the Roy C. Knapp School of Percussion and his many celebrated students included Gene Krupa, Louie Bellson, Dave Tough, Baby Dodds and Bobby Christian. (5106)
