Autograph letter from the German pianist and teacher. 1 page. January 31,1895. In English, to "Miss Oldfield," agreeing "to see the young lady of whom you spoke when lately here." A few age spots, otherwise fine. 10.5 x 14 cm.


London-born, trained at the Royal Academy of Music, son of the pianist and editor Ernst Pauer with whom he studied (–1881), later with Eugen d’Albert (–1885), he taught first at the Cologne Conservatory (1887–97), then at the Royal Conservatory in Stuttgart (1897–1924), first as head of the masterclass in piano, then succeeding Samuel de Lange as Director of that institution in 1908, then becoming Director of the Leipzig Conservatory (1924–32). "Especially effective in large-scale works of the piano literature, he developed into a notable Beethoven and Brahms player, and introduced numerous works by contemporary composers such as Reger and Rachmaninoff."
