A rare letter from the influential and celebrated French tenor, who created a sensation in the Italian premiere of Rossini's "Guillaume Tell" by singing a high C with his full chest voice. He was creator of numerous Donizetti roles, including in "Parisina"(1833), "Lucia di Lammermoor "(1835), "La Favorite," "Les Martyrs" (1840) and "Dom Sebastien" (1843) and also sang the title role in the premiere of Berlioz's "Benvenuto Cellini" in 1838. In addition, he created major roles by Halevy, Auber, and Verdi. (4525)
