Albumen Photograph of the Kingston Drum and Fife Corps

Original 9.25 x 11.5 inch albumen photograph, titled and dated 1864 in ink in the lower margin. Mounted to hard backing, mount edges nicked and trimmed, but overall fine. A striking image.

Since 1872, Kingston has been the capital of Jamaica. "The establishment of Europeanized schools, missions and the importation of 'European bandmasters to build up and train military brass bands' [are] some of the common agents of European imperialism in Africa. These manifestations were a part of the colonial experience of Jamaica as well." (Robert Witmer, "'Local' and 'Foreign': The Popular Music Culture of Kingston ..."Latin American Music Review Vol. 8/1, p. 3) (4497)
