Hubbell, Raymond. (1879 - 1954)

Signed Sheet Music, "Poor Butterfly."

New York: T.B. Harms. A boldly signed and inscribed copy of the famous song by the American writer, composer and lyricist. Separated along spine, edges heavily chipped and with a few margin tears, none affecting signed area. An unsual inscription "to my Anglo-American friend Albert Freedman" dated "NY, 7/28/34."

Inspired by Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly and containing a brief musical quote from the act 2 duet "Tutti i fior" in the verse, the song was first published in 1916. Introduced on Broadway in "The Big Show," which opened in August 1916, it was first sung by Sophie Bernard. The song quickly became a pop standard, recorded by many artists. (4477)
