Signed Letter Regarding Boston Symphony
An interesting typed letter, boldly signed by the eminent Russian conductor, composer and double-bass virtuoso. Best remembered for his long tenure as Music Director for the Boston Symphony Orchestra (1924-1949), he founded the Tanglewood Festical and was mentor to many American musicians, including Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland.1 page, dated 7 October, 1923. From Paris, addressed "Mon cher Ami," to an unidentified columnist. A highly interesting letter, from just before the start of his famous Boston tenure. Translated, in full: "I read the short notice which you wanted to publish in your newspaper regarding my nomination in Boston. I would like to express my gratitude for your kind attention on my behalf - and furthermore, because you so well knew how to express the sentiments which I have always felt for French art, with which I have been more associated since the last years of my work in Paris."
