Babbitt, Milton. (b. 1916)

Signed Photograph

An interesting signed 8 x 10 inch photograph of the American composer and musical innovator, shown here in front of one of the early synthesizers whose musical applications he pioneered. "The operator sits before a keyboard, not unlike a typewriter, and conveys to the machine his instructions in the form of holes punched on a paper roll fifteen inches wide. These holes represent binary decimal code numbers which determine the resultant pitch class, octave, envelope (growth and decay characteristics), spectrum (broadly speaking: timbre), and intensity of the musical event." (Babbitt, "Electronic Music," in "The Collected Essays," p. 73) Small tear to right margin, otherwise in fine condition. (3555)
