Tamburini, Antonio. (1800 - 1876)

Autograph Letter

A superb and rare letter from the great Italian baritone, creator of numerous Bellini and Donizetti roles. One page, integral address leaf attached. Dated 16 May, 1833. From London, addressed to Carlo Severini, director of the Theatre-Italien. An interesting letter, asking his friend to retrieve some documents on his behalf. He shares the news that his wife has given birth to a baby boy who he is already teaching some musical notes - but "not enough to make an octave" and closes by sending "warm regards from us to dear Rossini."

Tamburini "was a singularly handsome man; his voice was rich, sweet, extensive and equal – ranging from F toF#, two perfect octaves – and in every part of it entirely under control. His execution has never been exceeded...No one since himself has so thoroughly combined grandeur, accent, florid embellishment and solidity." (Henry Chorley, "Thirty Years' Musical Recollections," 1862). (3456)
