Liège: Aug. Benard. 1891. First edition. 8vo. 166 [11] pp. Marble boards, three-quarter red leather, gilt-stamped spine with 5 raised bands. A remarkable copy, inscribed and signed on the front enpages by Belgian violin virtuoso, Martin Pierre Marsick (1847 - 1924); the son of the composer - Maximilen Vieuxtemps; and by one unidenfied signer. The inscription is neatly penned beneath a small affixed original photograph of Vieuxtemps. In full: "Souvenir de reconnaissance a Monsieur P. Taffanel pour sa participation au festival donne le 2 Mai 1897 au conservatoire de Paris au profit du monument H. Vieuxtemps." Board edges lightly chipped, joints weak, overall fine condition.The dedicatee of the inscription, flutist and conductor, Paul Taffanel (1844 - 1908) was "the founder of the modern French school of flute playing which has since been adopted throughout the world." The Vieuxtemps festival given in Paris in 1897 to raise funds for a Vieuxtemps monument, included performances conducted by Taffanel with soloists Marsick and cellist, Jules Loeb and with singers Rose Caron and Albert Alvarez. (3434)
