Rubinstein, Anton. (1829–1894)

Autograph Musical Quotation Signed

Autograph Musical Quotation Signed ("Ant. Rubinstein"). 4.5 X 9 inches, toned stripe to right edge otherwise fine, matted and framed with lithograph portrait by Doris Raab to 12 X 21 inches overall. The pianist/composer has penned a virtuoso passage, marked "Allegro non troppo," possibly from a cadenza. Dated "London, 1 June 1869."

Rubinstein left his native Russia in 1867, undertaking a "triumphant tour" through the greater part of Europe (Grove). This tour was to last essentially through the Spring of 1870. The present musical quotation was penned by Rubinstein on the same date as one of the pianist's two concerts given at John Ella's Musical Union in London, on his fourth visit to that city. Those concerts included mostly chamber music (with Wilma Neruda, Henri Vieuxtemps and Ernest Demunck), lieder (with A. Goetze) and a few shorter virtuoso works and the present quotation does not appear to be from the programs he offered there. (3428)
