Paganini, Nicolò. (1782–1840)

Large Lock of Hair in Original Presentation Box, with Presentation Letter

A substantial lock of hair, purportedly that of Nicolo Paganini, tied with 5 red silk bows, in a period quilted satin-lined bevelled glass lidded leather box (locked), 150 x 185 x 70mm. Offered together with a bilingual autograph inscription in the hand of the great virtuoso: "Alla Signora Chatterton avec les compliments de Nicolo Paganini." 1 page, 8vo (oblong), no date.

Assuming that the document and extravagant gift date from the end of Paganini's life the recipient could have been the wife of John Balsir Chatterton (1805-1871, 'The Paganini of the harp'), or the wife of his younger brother, Frederick, whose talents on the harp were said to have been even greater.
