Gyrowetz, a noted Bohemian composer and conductor, studied composition with Paisiello and counterpoint with Nicola Sala, and was a friend of Mozart. He is credited with helping to create the Romantic style in the early 19th century. "During his first visit to Vienna, in either late 1785 or 1786, he made the acquaintance of Haydn, Dittersdorf, Albrechtsberger and Mozart; he developed a warm relationship with Mozart, who performed one of his symphonies at a subscription concert... Escaping the revolutionary fervour of Paris [in 1789], Gyrowetz came to London where he spent the next three years... When Haydn arrived in 1791 Gyrowetz helped introduce him to the city's high society... After the turn of the century four-movement formats are dominant in his instrumental works, and an understanding of unity, balance and proportions is apparent - not within the stylistic parameter of Haydn or Beethoven, but within the emerging new Romanticism, a style that he helped to create."
