As with the first edition of K. 537, published in the same year by André, the title-page of K. 459 makes explicit reference to the coronation of Leopold II: "Ce Concerto a été executé par l'auteur à Francfort sur le Mein a l'occasion du Couronnement de l'Empereur Léopold II."

"The coronation of Leopold II actually took place on 9 October 1790 in Frankfurt cathedral, whereas Mozart's concert was held in the Municipal Playhouse there on the morning of 15 October. In addition to the two piano concertos, K. 459 and K. 537, one in each half of the concert, according to the surviving programme (Deutsch, 1965, p. 374), the event included two symphoneis...performed at the beginning and end, along with an improvised fantasy and three arias or duets. Given its performance on this occasion, K. 459 deserves the epithet 'Coronation' concerto just as much as the more famous K. 537 in D. " (John Irving, "Mozart's Piano Concertos," p. 219) (3277)
