Tansman, Alexandre. (1897–1986)

Autograph Music Manuscript, "Elegy."

A very fine and uncommon original manuscript from the French composer of Polish birth who was also a celebrated concert pianist. "Elegy," scored for 2 violin parts, 2 viola parts, and 2 cello parts. Complete in 23 measures on three large systems, inscribed at the head: "To my very dear friends the Brodesky ensemble...with my very deep affection and gratitude from Alexander Tansman. Brussels, Jan. 1947." Beneath the final system at the foot of the page, the composer has written: "I hope it doesn't sound too badly! It was written between two rehearsals!" On thin manuscript paper, edges somewhat rough, and with small tears along right margin and bottom corner and head, only slightly affecting inscription at one point. 28 X 38 cm.

We have found no record of this short but moving work ever having been published. (3275)
