[Music Iconography] Lairesse, Gerard de. (1640 - 1711)

"Musica," Original Engraving ca. 1700.

A very fine original copper engraving by Gerardum (Gerard) de Lairesse (1640 - 1711), as issued by Gerard Valk in Belgium, ca. 1700. A very fine impression, with wide margins. Plate measures 37 X 34 cm; overall 35.5 X 46 cm. Scattered foxing at margins, light crease mostly affecting right margin, overall very fine.

Lairesse was one of the most celebrated painters of the Dutch Golden Age, and with his classical, allegorically-themed and French-oriented style, he was known as the "Dutch Poussin." A portrait of him by Rembrandt hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (3181)
