Passion Music after the Gospel of Matthew - Rare 1894 Program

Original program from a March 20, 1894 performance at St.Michaelis Kirche in Hamburg, featuring the famous contralto under the direction of Prof. Julius von Bernruth, with organist Carl Armbrust and the orchestra lead by violinist Henry Schradieck.  16 pp., includes full text.  Spotting throughout, crease in lower right corner, final two pages with large tears and significant losses (nearly entirely lacking).

Amalie Joachim, wife of violinist Joseph Joachim until 1884, was one of the leading oratorio and lied singers of the 19th century, and important interpreter of the songs of Robert and Clara Schumann and of her close friend, Johannes Brahms.

Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, one of his supreme masterpieces, was published well after the composer's death, in the wake of the famous performance by Mendelssohn on 11 March 1829, the most important event in the Bach revival of the nineteenth century. (2971)
