Bernstein, Leonard. (1918–1990)

3 Large Color Cibachrome Photographs

A stunning set of original photographs taken during a rehearsal with the Philadelphia Orchestra and signed and dated "Philadelphia, 1976" on the verso by the photographer, Allen J. Winigrad. 10 x 12, 11 x 14 and 8 x 14 inches.

In the first image, Bernstein is shown conducting during a rehearsal, eyes closed, head tilted upwards, completely engaged in the music. The second is a closeup bust portrait, in an unsual pink lighting. The third photograph shows Bernstein seated at a piano. His musical "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," about the history of the White House, was first performed in Philadelphia on February 24, 1976 and the present photographs are from that period.

The photographer, Winigrad, was granted unprecedented access to rehearsals of the Philadelphia Orchestra in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. The result was a series of photographs which were taken first as slides and then developed with the deluxe and expensive Cibachrome process. Cibachrome prints are prized for their special durability and resistance to fading and discoloration. Winigrad donated his collection of photographs of performing artists taken between 1973 and 1989 to the Van Pelt Library of the University of Pennsylvania in 1994. (2793)
