Tucker, Sophie. (1884–1966)

Large Photograph, Signed and Inscribed to Harold Fielding

A superb original Maurice Seymour photograph of the influential singer and comedian, one of the most popular entertainers in America during the first two-thirds of the 20th century. Signed and inscribed to the legendary English theatre and music impresario, Harold Fielding, "Seasons greetings for 1949, Love from Sophie Tucker." Measuring an impressive 28 X 36 cm.

The Russian-Jewish emigree began as a vaudeville and burlesque singer, sometimes appearing in blackface, and became especially well known as a "Coon Shouter," performing African American influenced songs. Though she eventually abandoned blackface, she continued to draw much of her material from African American writers and culture, and was known in the teens as the "Mary Garden of Ragtime." Among her most famous songs was "My Yiddishe Momme," and she was a star especially in Jewish communities throughout the country. Billed as "The Last of the Red Hot Mamas," her hearty sexual appetite was a frequent subject of many of her other hits. (2781)
