Galli-Marié, Célestine. (1840-1905)

Rare Woodburytype Photograph from the year before Carmen.

A remarkable original photograph by Pierre Petit (Woodburytype by Lemercier et Cie), showing the mezzo-soprano in the year before her great triumph as the creator of the title role in Bizet's Carmen.

Mounted, as issued, on the cover of issue 41 of "Paris-Theatre," published the week of February 26, 1874. Photograph in very fine condition, fragile paper with tears at margins, overall very good. 23 x 35 cm.

Galli-Marié is principally remembered for her creations of the title roles in "Mignon" (1866) and Bizet's "Carmen" (1875). 'She was praised for her intelligence, natural acting ability (as both comedian and tragedian) and musicianship; her voice was not distinguished for its range or volume, but for the warmth of its timbre."
