Arendt, Hannah. (1906 - 1975)

Signed Photograph

Rare signed original Pach Brothers portrait photograph of one of the most important and influential thinkers of the twentieth century.  Signed "Hannah Arendt" in blue ink on the mount beneath her image and in pencil by the photographer. Image ca. 9- 3/16" x 6-3/16" on bevelled photographer's studio mat, overall ca. 15-1/2 x 11". Mount lightly age-toned with small repaired tear lower right, otherwise in very good condition.

An exceedingly rare signed photograph of the German-born American philosopher and political scientist who came to America as a refuge from the Nazis in 1940s and characterized "totalitarianism" in her hugely influential 1951 book.  With the publication of The Origins of Totalitarianism, her reputation as a thinker and writer was established and a series of works followed. These included the books The Human Condition in 1958, as well as Eichmann in Jerusalem and On Revolution in 1963. Apart from the present signed photograph we have traced no examples having appeared on the market in over 40 years of records.  (23077)
