Szeryng, Henryk. (1918–1988)

Signed Photograph

Signed Lipnitzki of Paris portrait photograph of the Polish-born violinist playing his instrument.  Inscribed to English orchestra manager John Charles, "To John Charles / with cordial wishes / from Henryk Szeryng / Aug. 27th '63" to lower margin.  Mounted to rigid backing.  9 x 7.25 inches (23.4 x 18.3 cm).  Small surface creases from mounting, else in very good condition. True signed photographs of Szeryng are uncommon and this example is certainly among the finest we've encountered.

A student of Carl Flesch and (for composition) Nadia Boulanger, he had a major performing and recording career, and was a frequent collaborator of Arthur Rubinstein and Pierre Fournier. He became a naturalized Mexican citizen after visiting in 1941 on a mission to relocate Polish refugees from the Nazis, and he taught in Mexico for many years while maintaining an active concert career. One of the major violinists of the 20th century.
