Fournier, Pierre. (1906–1986)

Signed Photograph

Signed title leaf cut from a program of a duo recital of the great French cellist in Belgrade on April 4, 1951, accompanied by the Slovenian composer and pianist Marijan Lipovšek.  Signature to foot of title with halftone portrait of the cellist and his name (in Cyrillic) as caption; basic facts of concert in Serbian (Cyrillic) to verso.  7 x 4.75 inches (17.6 x 12.2).  Horizontal fold; somewhat browned.

One of the greatest cellists of his generation, Fournier participated in a row of world premieres.  Frank Martin wrote his Cello Concerto for him and Francis Poulenc his Cello Sonata.  Fournier's decision to substitute for Casals, who refused to play under the German occupation, in 1943 in the trio with violinist Jacques Thibaud and pianist Alfred Cortot, did not damage his career in the long run.  In 1948 he made his first tour to the United States, which was a resounding success.

Marijan Lipovšek (1910–1995), the father of mezzo-soprano Marjana Lipovšek (b. 1946), was a sought-after accompanist. (22417)
