Beethoven's Septet, Op. 20, originally composed from 1799 to 1800 and scored for violin, viola, clarinet, horn, bassoon, violoncello, and double bass, was immensely popular almost from the beginning. It gave rise to a large number of arrangements for all kinds of instrument combinations. Beethoven himself arranged his Septet as a Trio for clarinet (or violin), violoncello and piano, Op. 38.
