[Anti-Semitism in Music] [National Socialism] Blessinger, Karl. (1888–1963) [Perle, George. (1915–2009)]

Mendelssohn Meyerbeer Mahler: Drei Kapitel Judentum in der Musik als Schlüssel zur Musikgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts

A chilling example of anti-Semitic Nazi writing on music (in German). Berlin: Bernhard Hahnefeld, 1939. 94 pp. Handstamp of George Perle to front endpaper. Handstamp of Adolf-Hitler-Schule Köln Aachen to p. 4; shelf mark of its library to upper board and p. 4. 7.25 x 5 inches (18.5 x 12.5 cm). Browned; boards bumped; spine lost. Otherwise in good condition. From the collection of American composer George Perle.

The subtitle translates as "Three chapters of Judaism in Music as a key to music history of the nineteenth century." The book, a pamphlet in scholarly disguise, dissects the careers of the three most influential German-Jewish musicians of the that century—Felix Mendelssohn Bertholdy, Giacomo Meyerbeer, and Gustav Mahler—and their historical influence and legacy from an orthodox Nazi point of view. Blessinger was a musicologist who taught at the Akademie der Tonkunst in Munich and chaired his school's section of the NS-Dozentenbund (Nazi Association of College Teachers) from 1936. He retired in 1951 and led an undisturbed life after.

The Adolf-Hitler-Schule Köln–Aachen, also known as Adolf-Hitler-Schule Waldbröl by its actual location, was a monstrous project of a Nazi elite school that was never completed. (22031)
