[Salzburg Mozarteum] Paumgartner, Bernhard. (1887–1971) & Zallinger, Meinhard von. (1877–1970) etc. [Newman, Ruby. (1903–1973)]

Signed Diploma for Ruby Newman's Completed Summer Course in Conducting

Signed typescript diploma of the Salzburg Mozarteum for American bandleader Ruby Newman confirming the successful completion of summer courses in 1933 and 1934. In German. Dated Salzburg, June 7, 1935. Signed by Paumgartner (director of the Mozarteum), Zallinger (head of the opera conducting department) and two more persons. Handstamp of Mozarteum. Text mentions that Ruby also attended lectures and conducting exercises by Bruno Walter and studied with Clemens Krauss. 7.6 x 12.7 inches; 19.5 x 32 cm (visible). Laid down to rigid backing with slightly larger matting also affixed, else fine.

There is little doubt that the recipient of the diploma was the famous American "high society bandleader" (as the New York Times characterized him in his obituary of September 23, 1973). While Ruby's championship of the Viennese waltz was proverbial, the fact that he attended classes at the Mozarteum is not mentioned in the obituary. (21937)
