Meyerbeer, Giacomo. (1791-1864)

Autograph Letter Signed to Narcisse Girard, recommending Julius Schulhoff

ALS of the German composer, then active in Paris and famous for his French operas. In French. Dated "Thursday night." 1 p. Bifolium. "Allow me to call Mr. Jules Schulhoff to your attention, one of the greatest pianists of our time, who has been in Paris for some time and has given a concert last week with an immense success. He mostly plays the music of the classics with rare perfection. It would be his greatest wish to perform a piece by Beethoven at one of the concerts of the Société des Concerts, and if in the program of the concert on Sunday there were still an opening, he would be happy to fill in."

Narcisse Girard (1797-1860) was a French conductor and composer. A friend of Hector Berlioz, he conducted the first performance of the latter's Harold en Italie. Jules [Julius] Schulhoff (1825-1898), an Austrian-born pianist, lived in Paris from 1845 to 1870. He was a great-uncle of the composer Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942). The letter seems to date from Schulhoff's first years in Paris. 8.25 x 5.25 inches (21 x 13.5 cm). (21734)
