Sarasate, Pablo de. (1844–1908)

"Habanera" - Autograph Musical Quotation Signed

Autograph musical quotation from the important violinist and composer, who has penned the first four measures of the violin part from his piece Habanera (Spanish Dances no. 2, op. 21), signed and titled and dated December 1, 1887. On a small album leaf with a clipped halftone photograph of Sarasate mounted at the upper left corner. Some light edge wear and toning around the edges; overall fine. 4.3 x 3.5 inches (11x 9 cm). Together with a postcard photograph.

Responding to the wide demand for showy salon music, Sarasate composed four books of Spanish Dances between 1878 and 1882. The first book, including the present Habanera  as the second dance, was composed in Germany between December 1877 and February 1878, and dedicated to Joseph Joachim, whom he had met in Berlin.
