Elaborately produced presentation copy piano vocal score by the Italian romantic composer, evidently prepared for the dedicatee of the work, Marie Henriette Anne of Austria, Queen of the Belgians (1865 - 1902). 4to. [8]-113 pp, including extra title page and extra dedication page printed in gold ("À Sa Très Gracieuse Majesté La Reine Des Belges..."). Music engraved throughout. [PN] 16612Bound in contemporary red morocco, triple gilt fillet on covers, gilt ornamented spine with 5 raised bands, blue silk endpapers, gilt sides and gilt inside dentelles, gilt ornamented pastedowns. Title slightly soiled, some browning in the margins, overall fine. Rare. Worldcat records 5 copies, only 1 in the US (Harvard). 

The Sicilian-born composer Chiaromonte was a pupil of Raimondi and Donizetti and after a career as a tenor, undertook composition, producing 9 operas, the present oratorio, and a method for singers. He was expelled from Naples as a revolutionist in 1850, went to Genoa, from 1855 was chorusmaster at Paris and London, and from 1862 was professor at the Belgian Royal Conservatoire. (21278)
