The photographer Gyula Kertész first made his name as a celebrated Hungarian international footballer who played the forward position alongside his two brothers, Vilmos and Adolf, and subsequently coached a number of clubs in Germany, Switzerland, France and Scandinavia. In 1911, to supplement his income, along with fellow MTK player Izidor Kürschner he set up a photographic studio. After emigrating to the US in 1933, in addition to his photographic work, he worked in the record industry and his son, who called himself George Curtiss, was a leading manager at Remington Records.
