"I like the place Yaddo" - Autograph Letter Signed

Uncommon ALS from the American composer to the stage manager and director Louis M. Simon, to verso of a Saratoga Springs postcard.  Blitzstein writes, in full, "A very typical scene in Saratoga.  I like the place Yaddo; it is a large, gloomy, old-fashioned mansion.  I expect to work well, too. / What a catastrophe that Nishy has departed?  Can he be duplicated? / My love / Marc."  Postmarked "June 1" of an unknown year.  In fine condition.  5.5 x 3.5 inches (14 x 8.9 cm.).

Marcus Blitzstein won national attention in 1937 when his pro-union musical The Cradle Will Rock, directed by Orson Welles, was shut down by the Works Progress Administration.  He is particularly known for The Cradle Will Rock and for his Off-Broadway translation/adaptation of The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, as well as for operas, musicals, and film music.  Louis M. Simon worked for the Federal Theatre Project, the branch of the WPA originally responsible for funding The Cradle Will Rock. (21013)
