Lake, Veronica. (1922-1973) [Pilates, Joseph. (1883-1967) ]

Pilates Studios Membership Card - Signed by Lake and the Founder of Pilates!

Pilates Studios membership card for the American actress, best known for her femme fatale roles in film noirs with Alan Ladd during the 1940s, signed by Lake and Joseph Pilates, the founder of the physical fitness method.  Moderate wear, ink staining to verso and light smudging to signature, overall in fine condition.  4 x 2.5 inches (10.2 x 6.4 cm.).

A prominent film star through much of the 1940s, Lake's career began to decline in part due to her alcoholism.  Despite occasional guest appearances on television, her career never recovered, and she died at only 50 years old from hepatitis and acute kidney injury.

Joseph Pilates created pilates in the aftermath of the 19th century culture of exercising to alleviate ill health.  The practice remains staggeringly popular, with around 14 million practitioners around the world. (20965)
